Cthulhu Dark Character Sheet

I have been much taken of late by Cthulhu Dark, Graham Walmsley’ s ultralight rules system for Lovecraftian games. Its very much a storytelling system, with minimal and extremely hackable rules. You can download the game here – all three pages!

I will be playing for the first time this weekend, and I have created a two page character sheet and rules summary for my own game. My version adds a few extras, based on some very helpful discussions at Yog-Sothoth and Story Games. The sheet is adapted from some very helpful original materials by Jenscot.

Here is the link:

After play I may make further refinements, and convert the PDF into a fillable form.

Ontolosna Creators’ Guide 3: Gifts of the Aji

The third Ontolosna Creators’ Handbook – Gifts of the Aji – has been updated and is available for download. It is an 11 page PDF reference for fellow world makers introducing the animal and human Aji, Buddha-like figures that lie at the very centre of the Bright Journey. All of the Guides are available from the Guidebooks & Maps page.

The Aji (plural) are revolutionary teachers and leaders who implement great religious and social change. An Aja (singular) transcends individual Traditions, often combining aspects of them in new and surprising ways. Aji are associated with technological progress, religious innovation, social upheaval, and spiritual, emotional and sexual liberation. They are believed to have Awakened into Tay’kan (Liberation). Aji are forces of change, but often leave great destruction in their wake. The Aji are opposed by Shali or Heroes.

Blue Shadow: Lantern & Blade

This one is for Pippin, my light and strength. It depicts a young Ban woman abroad at hosook, the midnight hour of purity and transformation.

My way of explanation, this is an Ontolosnan scene. Ontolosna is lit by three unmoving suns, and the colour changes of On the primary mark the division of the Ontolosnan day (see Time).

The blue and violet/black colour cycles constitute narim or shadow. Hosook, or the moment of purity – pure violet – is ‘midnight’, and is the time when On takes back. Temperatures fall dramatically over just a few heartbeats; and fog or frost may form, even in the heat of monsoon.

Hosook is associated with private ritual, with healing, with endings, with tantra and transformation. It is sacred to Komun Black Tongue, Dark Mother of the Kal’ttar. Humans tend to awaken at Hosook, and so the long narim is broken into two sleeping cycles.

These are simple signalling systems to communicate romance and physical violence respectively in freeform and systemless roleplaying games.
