SQ Mag is an international, free speculative fiction ezine, published every two months by IFWG Publishing. It’s a great read, a fantastic initiative, a great vehicle for new talent, and it’s available as an ebook via email! And did I mention it’s free?
When my old friend Gerry Huntman, the Chief Editor of IFWG Publishing, approached me to do a science fiction cover for the July 2012 edition, I came up with Songline Rangers. My workplace, the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research at ANU, works very closely with a number of Indigenous ranger groups in the Northern Territory and the Kimberley. Over the last six months I’ve been working on a ranger monograph, People On Country, edited by Jon Altman and Sean Kerins, and it seemed kind of natural to extend that interest in a creative way.
‘Songline Rangers’ is rendered from a 3D model created in DAZ Studio 4 with postwork in Adobe Photoshop. It is © John Hughes, with perpetual use granted to SQ Mag, and published here by permission. And yes, there’s a (not very) hidden message!
